When you have become parents for the first time, the usual struggle that you have to deal with is consoling the baby when he/she cries. The difficult aggravates especially when parents are clueless about what makes the baby cry.
You cannot deal with the kid as an adult as the reasons for crying are entirely different. If you have not been around with kids much, then you will be on a wild goose chase!!
Babies do cry at about 3 hours a day! And that is absolutely normal.
Let us see what makes the new family member cry: –
Hunger
This is the most probable situation that your child is in. A newborn needs to be fed at regular intervals. It the mother is nearby the baby at this time, the best thing would be breastfeeding (or formula, as the case may be).
Otherwise, baby food suitable for the age is recommended.
Signs:- Putting their hand to mouth, fussing
Burping
If crying is frequent even after feeding then he might have some difficulty in releasing gas from the stomach and this may make the baby uncomfortable. Babies swallow air while breastfeeding/bottle feeding. Burp him and he will be okay.
Stomach problems from colic and gas
Sometimes your baby gets tummy problems due to gas or colic. In this case, pain is observed when the baby is fed. Try putting the baby on her/his back and moving his leg. If the pain is due to gas, the pain lessens by this.
Dirty Diaper
This one is easier to check and once you have mastered the routine of checking diaper/Newborn Cloth Nappy at regular
intervals you can make sure the baby doesn’t feel uncomfortable for too long.
Too cold/Too hot
You can check if the baby is feeling hot/cold by feeling on the tummy or the back of his neck. If he’s sweaty, remove a layer of clothing and correct the temperature by adjusting the ac or the speed of the fan. Even in cold weather, do not add too many layers of clothing. Quilts are not suitable for a newborn baby, as they can lead to accidental suffocation.
Too much stimulation
Sometimes to make babies comfortable, parents play with the kid a little more and it can have a reverse effect. This would be the case when crying is more at the end of the day or after too much stimulation.
If this is the case move the baby to a quiet room where she/he could relax and sleep.
Needs Sleep
Sometimes, babies cry because they are tired and what they need is good sleep. New visitors and/or singing/playing may not help the baby to sleep. Crying at the slightest thing, staring blankly into space and being quiet are some of the behavioural patterns that would be present at this time. Try singing to the baby or talking in a soft voice and turn off the bright lights.

Babies like to be cuddled. They need to feel the warmth of the parents, feel their heartbeat and identify their smell too.
Not Well
If you are sure that the baby’s basic needs are met and if he is still crying it is time to check his health state. The primary thing to do now is to check his temperature and any possible stomach upset issues which might have symptoms of loose motion. Make sure that he is troubled with itchy labels/cloth tags, a stranded hair o his fingers/diapers. Trust your gut instinct in this case as you might feel that crying this time is not usual. Get him to a physician at the earliest.
